St Thomas of Canterbury Roman Catholic Church St Thomas' R.C. Church, Burgate, Constructed 1874 St Thomas' Roman Catholic church (the first in the city since the Reformation) was constructed in 1874/75, on land just behind the site of St Mary Magdalene church, demolished in 1872. Before the building of St Thomas', the Hales Place chapel was used by the Roman Catholic congregation. St Thomas' was designed by John Green Hall, who also produced the Congregational Church in Guildhall Street. Inside, a reproduction of St Thomas Becket's shrine was placed over the altar. St Thomas' was lucky to survive the Blitz in June 1942, sustaining minor blast damage to windows and the pinnacle. In 1962, a large hall was attached on one side. Records kept with the Incumbant Copies of the records at the Centre for Kentish Studies, Maidstone
