St Peter's

St Peter's church is believed to be on the site of a Roman church, and may have been rebuilt by St Augustine in the Saxon period. The church tower shows heavy evidence of the re-use of building materials, with Roman tiles and Saxon corner stones. The nave and font date from the 12th Century.

In the 14th Century, a new aisle was added to cope with an expanding congregation, unlike the poorer southern areas of the city, where churches closed and merged.
