St Mary Magdalene Tower of St Mary Magdalene, Burgate St Mary Magdalene was 13th Century in origin. The surviving Perpendicular Gothic tower dates from 1502-03, and stood at the western end of the north aisle. The tower contains several memorials formerly in the church, including an impressive example commemorating John Whitfield, who died in 1691. Richard Barham, the author of 'The Ingoldsby Legends', was an inhabitant of the parish. In 1861, the parish was united with St George's, and closed in 1866. Upon the church's demolition in 1871, arches and pillars were used to extend nearby St George's, though sadly this was lost in the 1942 Blitz and subsequent demolition. Records in Cathedral Archives
