St Margaret's

St Margaret's Church, St Margaret's Street, made redundant in 1942 (now the Canterbury Tales audio-visual attraction).

St Margaret's church was founded in the 12th Century, though much of the present structure dates from the 14th Century, when a new aisle was added to serve an expanding congregation. Around 1850, the original chancel was demolished in order to widen St Margaret's Street, allowing stagecoaches to swing into the entrance of the Royal Fountain Hotel opposite, and a more truncated polygonal chancel designed by Sir Gilbert Scott was constructed.
