Kent County Council- Birth, Marriage and Death Certificate Registration Service

This site has a searchable index of Marriages from 1837 to 2002, with the reference enabling a certificate to be ordered from the listed Kent Registration Office, hopefully with Births and Deaths to follow. Please note that the Medway region is not included, as it is now a separate Authority. If you have been unable to find an entry in the National Index, you may be able to find it at this local level.

The Canterbury Tour

Part of the Cantweb site, this is a photographic "virtual" tour of the City, enabling the visitor to walk up and down the streets of the city centre, pointing out places of interest.

A mainly-text site about the smallest town in England. Includes some images from the film "A Canterbury Tale", partly filmed at this location.

The official site for searching the 1901 Census of England and Wales. The index is free to use, but images of the original Census are "pay-per-view".

Probably the largest Genealogical search engine on the 'Web, with hundreds of thousands of links on every conceivable subject useful to family history.

FreeBMD- Birth, Marriage and Death Certificate Indexes

Recently upgraded, this very busy site offers a fully searchable transcription of the Indexes. Please note that coverage is not complete, as this project is entirely volunteer run and transcribed.

GENUKI- UK Genealogical Information

Your first stop for general information relating to Genealogy and family history in the UK.

The National Archives

Formerly the Public Record Office, this site includes a searchable index of documents held at Kew, plus some online resources, such as the PCC Wills pre-1858, and the First World War Medal record card index.

1837 Online

A "pay-per-view" site with scanned images of the registration indexes of Births, Marriages and Deaths. Now including the 1861 Census, and many military indexes.

The General Registration Office Certificate Ordering site

Armed with your index entry from the 1837 Online site, you can order your certificate from this site, instead of going to Myddleton Place in person, or writing to Southport for an application.

Ancestry.co.uk

Another site for which payment is required (approx. £25 a quarter), but for which you get access to Censuses from 1841-1901, plus many, many more databases.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Register of Remembrance

A superb site allowing the tracing of the graves or memorials of all British Empire soldiers and some civilians who fell in the two World Wars. Recent improvements include plans of the cemeteries, enabling pinpointing of a grave's position before traveling to the site.

Proceedings of The Old Bailey, 1674 to 1834

A fully-searchable index of cases tried at the Old Bailey between these dates. Well worth trying your ancestors names- you never know, they may have been a witness... or worse!

The London Gazette Search Page

Now expanded to cover the whole of the twentieth century, a fully name-searchable database of the official publication listing medals awarded, officer promotions, bankruptcies and changes of name.
